Abstract:

Join us as Zach Willand discusses aspects of PowerBI that may help new administrators or report builders of the service get started.  Additionally, the talk will highlight the benefits of using app packages, using data flows to reduce strain on refresh time, the costs/benefits of near real-time data vs real-time data, and common data architecture mistakes.

Speaker:

Zach Willand is a Business Intelligence developer at Davis H. Elliot Company. Upon graduating college, Zach was a research analyst in a virology lab at the University of Kentucky where his love of data and analytics began. He then obtained his M.S. in Applied Engineering and Technology Management with a concentration in cyber security. Currently, Zach has been focused on driving organizational improvement by utilizing tools such as Power BI, SQL, and cloud-based solutions like Azure Data Factory and Azure Automation to facilitate better business decisions with meaningful data. Zach was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but has been living in the Central Kentucky area for the last two decades.

In this talk, listen to HMB’s Director of Microsoft Business Solutions, Trey Mayer, discuss our customer’s journey to the cloud using the Microsoft Power Platform. We will discuss the good, the bad, and ugly and fill you in on lesson learned from nearly 100+ Power Platform production solutions. The session will also dive into learning best practices for staying organized, dev->-test->Prod promotion, and Power Platform governance. This session will primarily focus on the Power Apps Canvas Apps option and Power App triggered Power Automate Flows.

Trey Mayer, HMB Inc Director of Microsoft Business Solutions, has been working with the Office 365 since the days of BPOS. With experience ranging from SharePoint, Exchange, and now the Modern version of Office 365 including Microsoft Teams, Bots, Planner, Power Automate, Power BI, Power Apps, and more…Trey is always willing to share his POV and lessons learned from nearly 10 years in the real world. Under Mayer’s direction, The Microsoft Business Solutions Practice has numerous engaged clients ranging from Fortune 50, State and Local Governments, Education, Non-Profit, and Private organizations across many different sectors. Mayer is also active in the community as both an organizer – previously Executive Committee and Steering Committee for DogFoodCon in Columbus, OH and CodePaLOUsa in Louisville KY – and a seasoned speaker.

Tried or heard of PowerApps and wondering how you can put them to use? Come have lunch with CKYMUG as Donovan Decot presents “Leveraging PowerApps In Offline Mode”!
Starting with a simple example of moving an online app to the offline/disconnected model, the discussion will include methodology on when/how to check for internet connectivity, and how it can impact performance as seen by the end users. If time permits, we will cover some logging/error handling of Flow, and how to easily display the data in PowerBI to impress your boss!

Donovan is the Director of Application Development at the Davis H Elliot Company. He served in the Army for 9 years as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne suffering through 3 years of ‘hardship’ in Hawaii. During his 18 years in the IT industry he has achieved his MCSE, was an early adopter of HyperV, worked with SharePoint since 2007 and has been involved with the PowerPlatform for over a year. His current focus is migrating all existing mobile applications and SPD Workflows to PowerPlatform. Donovan is also the father of six children.
